TikTok Creative Center for Japan:
How to Find Top Ads, Trends and Winning Creative Patterns (2026)
To find effective TikTok ad creatives for Japan, open TikTok Creative Center's Top Ads, set Region to Japan, filter by your industry and objective, and break the top 10 to 20 ads into their hook, story, message, execution and CTA. Then rebuild those patterns natively in Japanese and test several hook variations. Creative Center is free and public, so anyone can do the research. The hard part is what comes next: reading Japanese ads you can't fully understand, and producing enough Japanese-native videos to test what you learn. This guide covers both, step by step.
Key takeaways
- TikTok Creative Center is free and public; logging in unlocks more data. Top Ads can be filtered by region, industry and campaign objective.
- Set Region to Japan and the ad language to Japanese: patterns that win in Japan often differ from those in the US or Southeast Asia.
- You can analyze Japanese ads without speaking Japanese by breaking them into five layers, then confirming tone with a native speaker.
- Borrow structure, not content. Rebuild with Japanese talent, short centered telop and three to five hooks per video.
- In ZVA's campaigns a TikTok creative typically lasts about 7 to 14 days, so research must feed a steady test-and-refresh cycle.
What TikTok Creative Center is (and what it is not)
TikTok Creative Center is TikTok for Business's own research hub for advertisers. TikTok's help center describes it as "a free, public home" for creative resources, and a login is not required to browse it, although TikTok recommends logging in to unlock all features and data. You can reach it at ads.tiktok.com/business/creativecenter.
At the time of writing (October 2026), the top navigation shows four areas:
- Top Ads (under Inspiration): a collection of high-performing auction ads, filterable by region, industry, campaign objective and more. TikTok says every ad shown has been authorized by its advertiser inside TikTok Ads Manager.
- Trends: trending hashtags by industry and time frame, with analytics on each hashtag's trendline, related videos, audience insights and regional popularity.
- Creative Tools: TikTok's Symphony tools for AI video generation, automated refreshes and resizing, plus an API.
- Influencer marketing: a route into creator partnerships.
TikTok also describes Inspiration as a place to find high-performing "keywords, patterns, and products." Views such as Keyword Insights or Top Products have appeared in some versions and regions, so if you see them, use the same Japan filter described below. Menu names change often; treat this article as a map and check the live site.
What it is not: Creative Center shows you what is working for other advertisers. It does not tell you why an ad worked for its audience, whether the same idea fits your product, or how to say it naturally in Japanese. That gap is where most overseas campaigns in Japan stall.
Step by step: finding Japan's top ads
Here is the workflow we recommend for a first research session. Plan on 60 to 90 minutes.
Two habits make this research far more useful. First, look outside your category: a "result first" hook from a mobile game ad can work for a fintech app. Second, note where the engagement graph peaks. If it peaks in the first two seconds and drops sharply, the hook is doing the work. If it climbs mid-video, the demo or reveal is the asset worth borrowing.
How to read Japanese top ads if you don't speak Japanese
Most overseas marketers hit the same wall: the top ads in Japan are dense with Japanese on-screen text (called telop) and fast, casual narration. You can still extract a lot without reading every word.
Watch with the sound off first
Japanese short-form ads are built for sound-off viewing, with large telop carrying the message. Watch each ad muted and note what you can understand from visuals alone: the first frame, the talent's expression, any before-and-after, the product reveal and the end card. If you understand the story muted, so do many Japanese viewers.
Translate the telop, but don't trust the translation
Screenshot key frames and run them through an image translation tool, or transcribe the narration with speech-to-text. This gets you the literal meaning. What it loses is tone: whether the line is casual or polite, whether it's a joke, a common phrase or a local reference. Machine translation tends to flatten these, so treat it as a rough guide.
Break each ad into five layers
ZVA's research framework splits every ad into layers that don't depend on language skills:
| Layer | What to record | What to look for in Japan |
|---|---|---|
| Hook (0 to 3 seconds) | Text, visual or voice; hook type (question, number, empathy, surprise) | Short, large telop in the center; relatable "everyday frustration" lines |
| Story | Problem to solution, testimonial, how-to, before and after | First-person testimonials and "I tried it" formats |
| Message | Price, function, emotion, social proof | Which benefit appears in the telop, and how early |
| Execution | UGC style or studio, talent age and look, telop design, music, cut pace | Talent who look like a peer of the target, not a model |
| CTA | Timing, wording, offer | Soft or direct; whether a campaign or offer is shown |
Log 10 to 20 ads in a spreadsheet with these columns. The shared patterns are your category's conventions. The gaps, such as an angle nobody uses, are where you can stand out.
Ask a native speaker for a 15-minute review
Before you build anything, have a Japanese native marketer review your top five picks. They can tell you in minutes whether a line is a meme, a dialect joke, or wording that only works because of a specific talent. This step alone prevents the most expensive mistake: copying something you didn't understand.

Trends shows what Japanese TikTok users are engaging with right now. Use it for context, not as a script.
- Hashtags: filter by industry and time frame, then open See Analytics to check whether a topic is still rising or past its peak. Hashtags rarely belong in the ad itself, but they reveal the themes and words your audience uses.
- Related videos: the hashtag analytics include related videos. Watching organic content shows you the "grammar" Japanese users are used to: framing, pace and how creators talk to camera. Ads that look like that content tend to get swiped away less.
- Music: only use sounds cleared for commercial use. TikTok's Commercial Music Library is a pre-cleared global library of about 1 million songs, and TikTok states that businesses cannot use the general music library for commercial purposes.
The most useful output of this step is a simple overlap: "what wins in my category in Japan" (from Top Ads) crossed with "what Japanese users care about this month" (from Trends). Ideas at that intersection are timely and grounded in evidence.
Top Products: which products are being advertised on TikTok
Top Products is the Creative Center section that ranks products by how often they appear in TikTok ads. Use it to check demand before you write a single script: which products in your category are being pushed, how strongly, and to whom.
- Filters: region, product category and time range (last day, 7 days or 30 days).
- List view: products ranked by ad activity, with metrics such as impressions, likes and comments.
- Details view: click-through rate (CTR), cost per action (CPA), an impressions trend chart, and audience insights such as age range and related interests.
Using it for Japan: first check whether Japan appears in the Region filter for Top Products. TikTok does not publish a fixed list of supported regions for this section, and the metrics shown can change. If Japan is not available, use Top Ads with Region set to Japan and your industry selected, and note which products recur. Treat CTR and CPA values as directional category benchmarks, not targets for your own account. Your results depend on your offer, landing page and creative.
A practical routine: pick 3 to 5 rising products in your category, open Details to see the audience's age range, then go to Top Ads to watch how those products are actually shown in Japanese creatives.
How to find effective TikTok ad creatives, and best practices for Japan
If you're asking "how do I find effective TikTok video ad creatives, and what are the best practices?", the short answer is: find patterns in Creative Center, rebuild them natively in Japanese, and let testing pick the winners. Here are the practices we apply when turning research into Japanese creatives.
1. Borrow the structure, never the content
Copy the hook type, story flow and pacing, not the lines, footage or talent. Copying another advertiser's ad can infringe copyright and run against TikTok's advertising policies. Remix instead: one ad's hook, another's structure and a trending, cleared sound.
2. Design the first two seconds as the ad
In ZVA's campaigns, TikTok's 2-second view rate (hook rate) typically sits around 25 to 30%, and we aim for 35% or higher. Hooks fall into three groups: emotional (curiosity, surprise, empathy), logical (numbers, comparisons) and social (testimonials, popularity). Write at least three to five hook variations for each video body.
3. Write telop for Japanese eyes
Keep hook telop very short. ZVA's rule of thumb is about eight Japanese characters, in large, bold type near the center of the screen, with an outline or background for contrast. Translated subtitles at the bottom of the frame are easy to ignore. For more on why, see our guide to localizing vertical video ads for Japan.
4. Cast Japanese talent who feel like peers
Viewers decide in a second whether an ad is "for me." A native Japanese speaker in a Japanese setting, speaking casually to camera, usually beats a dubbed global spot. On TikTok, ads that look too polished are often skipped as obvious ads, so UGC-style framing and natural delivery matter. If you plan to use creators, follow Japan's stealth marketing rules; see UGC and influencer ads in Japan.
5. Check claims before you shoot
Japan's Premiums and Representations Act prohibits misleading representations, and stealth marketing (ads disguised as organic posts) has been regulated since October 2023. Avoid absolute claims like "guaranteed" or "No. 1" without evidence. Our overview of advertising rules in Japan for foreign brands covers the basics. This is general information, not legal advice.
6. Plan volume, not a single "perfect" ad
Research produces hypotheses. You need enough videos to test them. A practical starting point is three to five videos that differ in message, each with several hook variations.
From research to results: testing and refreshing
Creative Center tells you what worked for someone else. Only your own data tells you what works for you. Here is how ZVA structures testing on TikTok in Japan (ZVA benchmarks, which vary by product and budget):
- Test variables in order of impact: hook first, then message, then structure, then text and CTA.
- Give each video enough delivery: treat results as provisional until a video has about 3,000 to 5,000 impressions.
- Use TikTok's tools together: Automated Creative Optimization to screen many assets, then Split Test to confirm what actually caused the win.
- Expect fatigue fast: in our campaigns in Japan, a single TikTok creative typically holds performance for about 7 to 14 days. Warning signs include CTR down 20% or more from its peak, rising CPM, and a 7-day frequency above 3.
- Refresh cheaply: keep the winning message and structure, then swap talent, hook, telop design or music to create fresh variations.
A test-and-refresh cycle typically takes two to three weeks. Run it continuously and you will need a steady flow of new Japanese videos, often several per week once spend grows. For cost context, see TikTok ads cost in Japan.
Why research alone isn't enough
Most overseas teams can do the research above. Where they get stuck is execution in Japan:
Research only
- Winning patterns identified, but scripts are translated from English
- No Japanese talent or studio access from overseas
- Weeks between idea and live ad
- Too few videos to test hooks properly
Research plus a Japan-based team
- Scripts written in Japanese from the start
- Native talent, telop and music in-house
- New hooks and variations produced quickly
- Production and ad operations share the same data
This is the work ZVA is set up for. Our team in Fukuoka handles planning, Japanese scripts, in-house talent, shooting, telop editing and music, producing 500+ vertical videos per month. Delivery takes as few as 5 business days, and opening variations (swapping the first 2 to 3 seconds of an existing video) start at ¥5,000 to ¥15,000, which makes hook testing affordable. We can also run your TikTok, Meta and Google ads, with performance-based plans available.
Summary
- TikTok Creative Center is free and public. Set Region to Japan in Top Ads, filter by industry and objective, and study 10 to 20 winners.
- Read Japanese ads by structure: hook, story, message, execution and CTA. Use translation tools for meaning and a native speaker for tone.
- Use Trends for timely themes and only commercially cleared music.
- Rebuild winning patterns natively: short, centered telop, Japanese talent, and three to five hooks per video.
- Test, then refresh every one to two weeks. Volume and speed decide results more than any single idea.
If you have done the research and need Japanese-native videos to test it, ZVA can help. We produce from ¥50,000 per video (overseas projects quoted individually) and work in Japanese, English, Korean and Chinese. Ask us for a free quote or see our pricing.
