Self-Serve Ad Buying Platforms in Japan (2026):
Google, LINE Yahoo, TikTok, Meta and More
Most paid media in Japan is bought through self-serve, auction-based platforms: 88.7% of internet ad media spend in 2025. You can open an account and launch campaigns yourself on Google, LINE Yahoo Ads, TikTok, Meta and others. This guide compares them for overseas brands and explains where self-serve buying gets hard in Japan.
Key takeaways
- Auction-based (self-serve) buying was ¥2.9352 trillion, 88.7% of Japan's internet ad media spend in 2025 (CARTA HOLDINGS et al.)
- For search, Google plus LINE Yahoo Ads covers most of Japan; Yahoo! JAPAN search ads run on LINE Yahoo Ads
- LINE Ads and Yahoo! Display Ads merged into LINE Yahoo Ads on April 1, 2026, with no minimum spend
- TikTok's official minimum is $50/day per campaign; Meta, X, Microsoft and Amazon also offer self-serve accounts in Japan
- The hard part is not the dashboard: it is Japanese ad review, Japanese landing pages and Japanese creative
What "self-serve" means in Japan's ad market
A self-serve platform lets you create an account, set a budget and bid in an auction without signing an insertion order. In Japan this is now the default way to buy digital ads. In 2025, auction-based ("programmatic") ads were ¥2.9352 trillion, 88.7% of the ¥3.3093 trillion spent on internet ad media. Reserved, guaranteed placements were ¥304.2 billion (CARTA HOLDINGS, Dentsu, Dentsu Digital and Septeni, March 2026).
So if you are asking which platforms let you buy ads in Japan yourself, the answer is: almost all the big ones. The real question is which ones reach your audience and what each needs from you.

| LINE Yahoo Ads | Yahoo! JAPAN search, display across Yahoo! JAPAN and LINE | Search share Google does not cover; LINE's reach (92.9% usage, ages 13–79) | No minimum spend (official) |

Search: Google plus LINE Yahoo Ads
Japan is unusual in having two search ad platforms worth buying. Google Ads covers Google search. Yahoo! JAPAN search ads, which are bought through LINE Yahoo Ads, cover Yahoo! JAPAN's own search, which many Japanese users still visit through its portal and apps. If search is a major channel for you, plan for both.
Search ads are the single largest ad type in Japan: auction-based search had a 38.7% share of internet ad media spend in 2025, about ¥1.28 trillion by ZVA's calculation. See Japan ad spend statistics for the full breakdown.
On April 1, 2026, LINE Ads and Yahoo! Display Ads were merged into LINE Yahoo Ads. LY Corporation says there is no minimum spend and you can start from a few thousand yen a day. Sign-up runs through a Business ID, a LINE Official Account and Business Manager. New ads can take about 1 to 3 business days to clear review. We could not confirm from public pages whether a company without a Japanese address can open an account, so check with LY Corporation before you plan around it.

Growth in Japan's ad market is in video: video ads passed ¥1 trillion in 2025 (121.8% YoY), and vertical video ads reached ¥204.9 billion (155.9% YoY, CyberAgent). All the platforms that sell this inventory are self-serve.
- TikTok Ads Manager: In-Feed ads, Spark Ads and Smart+ automation, plus TikTok Ad Network (formerly Pangle) for app installs. Official minimums are $50/day per campaign and $20/day per ad group. Premium formats such as TopView are reserved, not self-serve; see TopView vs TopFeed.
- Meta Ads Manager: Instagram Reels and Feed are strong for beauty, fashion and lifestyle.
- Google Ads (YouTube): YouTube has the widest reach of any platform in Japan, and Shorts inventory is bought in the same account as search.
- X Ads: useful for topics that trend fast, such as entertainment and games.

What overseas brands need before launching
- Japanese landing pages: ad review checks that the ad and landing page match. An English-only page weakens both review and conversion.
- Japanese ad review: platforms apply Japan's Premiums and Representations Act and stricter rules for health, cosmetics and finance. Claims such as "No. 1" need evidence. See advertising rules in Japan.
- Billing and tax: check the billing currency, payment methods (LINE Yahoo Ads prepay supports bank transfer, for example) and how Japanese consumption tax is invoiced.
- Measurement: install pixels, the Conversions API or an MMP before spending. Data that arrives late slows down auction learning.
- Creative volume: auction platforms reward fresh creative. In ZVA's TikTok campaigns in Japan, one creative typically holds performance for about 7 to 14 days.
Self-serve vs. working with a Japanese agency
Self-serve is a good fit when you have a Japanese speaker on the team, a Japanese landing page and the capacity to produce new creatives every week. It gets hard when ads are rejected for wording you cannot read, or when translated videos stop scaling after the first test.
A common hybrid: keep the ad accounts in your own name so you own the data and history, and bring in a Japan-based team for Japanese creative and day-to-day operation. ZVA works this way. We produce Japan-native vertical videos from ¥50,000 per video (overseas projects quoted individually) and can run TikTok, Meta and Google ads in your accounts, with performance-based plans available.
Summary
- About 90% of Japan's internet ad media spend is auction-based, so self-serve is the norm.
- For search, buy Google and LINE Yahoo Ads. For vertical video, TikTok, Meta (Instagram) and YouTube.
- LINE Yahoo Ads has no minimum spend. TikTok's minimum is $50/day per campaign.
- The real barriers are Japanese review, Japanese landing pages and enough Japanese creative to test.
